Recently, we were told of this moving experience

A husband and wife were set to move from San Diego, Ca. to Ausin Tx.,and had been quoted a price of $3525.67.  Onmoving company horror stories the day of the move, they were as giddy as any family would be, until the movers arrived.  Though they had been told their move would be in an 18- wheeler truck, they found themselves opening their door to untidy men who were driving a banged up moving van.

Not only was it not an 18- wheeler,

The van had been unsuccessfully repainted several times- with previous logos showing beneath the cheap, sheer paint.  Despite the anger, and frustration they felt, the couple went on to sign the paper.  However, upon signing, they were told of “extra” charges which they would have to pay. This was simply too much to handle, but the couple attempted to debate the charges with the emails which had been sent regarding the price of the move.

Although the emails were from an “agent”

From their company who set up the move, the movers did not waiver. The price would have to be paid before the moving could get started.  It was then that they called the company-  which resulted in being the “frosting on the cake”.  The “agent” in so many words told them that the “extras” were discussed and they would have to be paid.  Knowing this was untrue, the couple tried to argue the fact, however  the “agent” broke the first rule of customer service.  He did no listening and all talking.

He did not let them get a word in.

( This is something we at Priority 1 Moving would never do-  we believe that  great customer service comes by way of listening first, and talking second). So, as a result of the descrepancy about the charges, the “agent” told the husband and wife, that because they were not happy, they could send the movers away- but would not be refunded their deposit.  Guess how much the deposit was? Every bit of seven hundred dollars- which they have not to this day ever gotten back!  Yes, they kicked the men off their property, and dealt with the fact that they had no way to move, and needed to be out within the next few days- after the dust from the banged up truck settled.  Needless to say, they did move to Texas, for an undisclosed price- and hopefully are enjoying their new beginning.

Unpacking Tips To Help Settle In Quicker

Some people like unpacking in a new house because they associate it with a new start but others don’t enjoy it at all.  Either way the job should be done quickly so that you can settle in and enjoy your new surroundings.  There are plenty of unpacking tips to follow but most of them relate back to the packing to leave.

The first and most important tip is to ensure that every box you pack is labelled for the room it is to go into and a brief of what is in the box followed by a house inventory of boxes and items.

1.    Kitchen – when packing up the kitchen make sure boxes are smaller for crockery and there will be less chance of breakage due to dropping. When all your boxes arrive for the kitchen you will know by size and label what you have got. Before randomly unpacking give a quick thought to the use of the kitchen and where it would be best to have your items placed in the kitchen.

2.    Bedrooms – assemble the beds and make them. A good tip here is to pack all the bedding for each bed in a clear plastic bag and then each bag can be quickly located to the right bedroom.

3.    Bathroom – when packing, separate into small boxes the different items to unpack, before putting them in a large carrying box.  This way it will be easy to work out where these toiletries are to go and which bathroom.

4.    Garage – when packing smaller items it pays to have grouped them together for ease of unpacking into the right section of the garage.

5.    Living areas – the living area furniture is usually obvious and the movers will carry this into the right place for you but the accessories should be packed carefully into boxes and kept safe until you have time to unpack them which is usually one of the last jobs.  Any paintings should remain in the packaging until all the furniture is out and you know just where you want to hang them.

General Unpacking Tips

•    Prepare for unpacking by labeling and identifying boxes when you pack – number your boxes and make an inventory not only of the boxes but also where they are to go – keep out any tools you may need for assembling beds etc.

•    Start sorting out your belongings one month before moving and discarding anything you don’t want to take with you and this will give you less unpacking.

•    Start unpacking the essentials first: the basics in the kitchen so that you can cook a meal for the next day

•    Then make sure the beds that are needed are made up ready for sleeping and hang clothes in the closet (this is a great job for the kids or for helpers as they don’t have to make any decisions)

•    Start the washing – there is usually a lot of linen to wash after a move and if you put this on it can work while you work – another great job for helpers

•    Unpack the clean linen for the bathroom and the toiletries

•    Connect the computer and other electronic equipment

Once you have these jobs done you can then work through the remainder of the boxes in the following few days and get your house looking back to normal again.

The Basics of Moving Insurance.

Many people underestimate the importance of insurance. However, when things go wrong, they find out to their dismay that financially they are not prepared to handle the situation. Valuation by the Moving Company
Buyers need to choose a particular insurance according to their specific requirements. It is important to not confuse the valuation done by the moving company with the proper moving insurance. Valuation only defines a limited liability on the part of the moving company and does not cover everything as much as the cost of the goods. Valuation option is offered without any extra cost and is not related in any way with the insurance option.

Types of Moving Insurance

There are about five types of moving insurance applicable according to Canadian laws. These insurance options include:

1) Basic Coverage
For moving companies, it is mandatory by law to provide a basic coverage to the consumers. The compensation rate for this insurance is $0.60 per good per pound. It means that if the good weighs 30 pounds then the compensation rate would be $18.

2) Declared Value Coverage
This insurance provides better coverage than the basic ones. The compensation is based on the depreciated value of the good and not on its current replacement value. In this case, for the liability amounting to $1000, the consumer has to pay $7. There is Lump Sum Value option where it is the consumer who defines the shipment value.

3) Full Value Coverage
Under this coverage, all the items can be covered up to the replacement value. The compensation may be different if the box was packed by the consumer and not by the mover. This makes it necessary to keep the damaged items in the original boxes until the claims are settled. For items lost or damaged in transit, this is the most comprehensive insurance coverage.

4) Extremely Valuable Items
These are the items that are defined having higher value than their weights, such as art collections, antique items, currency, silver and silverware, cameras, among many other such items. Compensation claims are only settled if all the items had been clearly identified and recorded as well as signed by the consumer before the shipment.

5) Homeowners Insurance
Traditional homeowners insurance also provides coverage up to the specified limit which can be about 10% of the declared value of the goods. The insurance must be valid when the damage or loss takes place. Its details must be checked before the shipment because it may be valid only on the home where the policy was purchased.

The damage or loss moving insurance claims must be filed within 9 months. The condition of all the goods must be checked immediately after delivery to ensure there is no damage or loss.
