Not a Very Moving Experince

Moving Experience Horror Story

Not all moving companies are created equal.   Read all of the moving companies reviews in researching Bob’s company I found that others had shared his experiences.  Look for a company with a large fleet so that if the unthinkable happens, they can immediately accommodate the error.  Be sure there are no hidden costs and that the company has a friendly, helpful staff.  Check out exactly how your company handles fragile items, and only book a company that covers breakage.

When my friends decided to move out of state, they booked what they thought was a qualified moving company to take the stress out of their experience.  What they had instead was disappointment and an empty wallet.

Moving Day

Bob called the company and arranged for a moving date of October 31, 2011.  He gave his deposit and turned his attention to packing.  When October 31 arrived, the moving truck didn’t.  He called them and was informed that not only did they not have his reservation on file, but they had no trucks available.  Bob was also told that his deposit could not be refunded;  he had no choice but to accept a new date of November 2 to have his belongings picked up.

When November 2 came and went with no delivery, he called again and was told that the truck was scheduled for November 3.   When the truck did arrive on November 3 it brought his belongings, but with breakage and careless handling of his fragile items.  He was told that this was not covered because he did not purchase a deluxe package.  The final insult was when he was forced to pay nearly $340 more for the delivery than he had been quoted; apparently he had some “oversized” items that were not counted in his original agreement.

Why is Choosing a Moving Company so hard?

Choosing a Moving Company is stressful.

There are so many things to think about and everything is happening at the same time.  Am I making a mistake?  Will I like it there?  How am I going to get everything done in time? The last thing you want to deal with is moving companies that don’t live up to their contracts and promises.

Horror Stories Around the Globe!

Tyler J. was moving from Texas to Chicago, Illinois.  He called his moving company well in advance.  They provided him with a quote for the move and set-up a pickup and delivery date.  He got a little nervous when they didn’t come out and look at what his household goods consisted of to determine how much space they would be using.  When he called and asked about it, they said they were good to go with estimating.  Not true.  His quote was for $1500 but they billed him for $2158.   They arrived late to pick up the household goods, and they got to Chicago a week after the promised delivery date.

Moving Company horror stories are heard everyday.

Local Movers Preparation Guide

[sharebox4 sharetext=”Share This Page”] [/sharebox4]

In Vancouver local movers come in many shapes and sizes being prepared before you call a moving company can save you time and frustration when it is time for the actual move. This guide should help you be prepared when you do call if you have the main information ready ahead of time.

One of the main questions we get as local movers is how long will the move take?

Many people will ask how long will it take, to local movers, without knowing that a lot of factors are weighed into each move.

If you get an answer to this question without hesitation you may be asking the wrong company to do your job.Local movers know that each home or office is radically distinctive. There are many things to take into consideration before an accurate estimate can be given such as:

How large is your dwelling or office? Size plays a big roll in determining the amount of man hours involved in your move.

Is there an elevator available that can be set aside for the move?
When local movers use an elevator it can be tied up for hours. If local movers can utilize one elevator to use then the time spent waiting on and sharing an elevator is reduced tremendously.

Is parking obtainable for immediate loading and unloading? Local movers will want to be as close as possible to the entrance of the move site, making sure parking is available will save you extra time if the local movers do not have to hunt a parking space or traveling unnecessarily longer distances to load and unload.

Are you fully packed and ready to go? If you are this is a big time saver as the local movers will not need to spend the time in packing your items, which will in turn save you money.

Did you use boxes of the same size and quality? Stacking uneven box sizes can take up some valuable time and end up costing you more than if you had purchased all your boxes the same size. Consider purchasing boxes from your local movers It may appear that it would save money by getting boxes from work or a grocery store free of charge, in the end it will end up costing you additionally.

There are a great many reasons for not using them.  For example, secondhand food boxes or boxes from work are of lower grade quality – they could have absorbed moisture and odors from fruits or vegetables and are not configured to holding heavier loads.  Most local movers boxes are manufactured to hold up to 60 lbs.  In addition, when using boxes of different size and quality, it makes it more difficult for local movers to move and stack the boxes in an efficient timely manner.  Having to play “Tetris” when stacking the boxes in the back of the truck will add time to your move.

Is there a long hallway to your front door? Distance equals time for local movers.

Do you have items at a separate location? Many times a storage facility is also needed to be moved to the new home or office, if so how close is it and is it accessible?

Will you require storage facilities?
Be careful with accepting storage services from some local movers as they may place your items in an unsecured storage container in a backyard or alley and charge you for it!  Some local movers will be under a contract with a self-storage company, the moving company, or employee of the moving company has leased a storage locker and therefore are the only ones with access to the locker. If you need to gain access to your possessions, you would need to get permission from whoever leased the storage facility.

Inquire where or if the local movers have any type of partnership with self-storage companies and if they can provide a better rate to you then the general public would normally get

Are some of your items extremely fragile and require additional care? For obvious reasons fragile items will always take longer to load and pack. Take inventory of what you have and take into consideration the accumulative time it may take the local movers to handle them properly.

The Time of month and year plays a part for local movers.
Local movers are flexible in finding a moving time convenient for you but if you are able to, it is recommended that you avoid the summer season and the last few days or first few days of each month.  These are the prime moving times, it will be more expensive as well as cause you additional stress if you leave a move to the last possible moment.

Factors that you should think about before booking a mover include:
Do you need to be out of your current residence or office by a certain time?
Are you able to move into your new place immediately?
Will you need to book time off from work for the day of your move?

It is recommended that you call and book for a mover 4-6 weeks in advance.  If you wait until 1 week prior to your move, all moving slots may be taken.

Flammable items and pets should not be packed.
Most local movers comply with the law and do not move pets or flammable and hazardous materials such as propane tanks, paint, gasoline, firearms and motor oil. .

Fuel surcharges
Some local movers charge a fuel surcharge, a minimum charge or a number of other concealed charges
Ask if they have a fuel surcharge or require a minimum number of hours. Travel time is usually applicable and will be the actual travel time it takes to arrive at your pickup location and from your destination back to the local movers truck compound.  Should your move be an hourly rate be sure it is rounded off at the nearest 15 minutes.
